Health & Safety Policy

Purpose

Croydon Arabic School is committed to providing a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment for all students, staff, volunteers, and visitors. We believe that everyone has a shared responsibility for maintaining a safe environment where students can learn with confidence.

Legal Framework

This policy has been developed with reference to the principles of:

  • The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
  • The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • The Children Act 1989 and 2004
  • Relevant Department for Education guidance for out-of-school settings

Responsibility

The Principal has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring that appropriate health and safety arrangements are in place.

All staff, volunteers, students, and visitors are expected to contribute to maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment.

School Responsibilities

Croydon Arabic School will:

  • Provide a safe learning environment for all educational activities.
  • Ensure appropriate supervision of students throughout the school day.
  • Make staff and volunteers familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
  • Ensure that a suitably trained First Aider is available during school sessions.
  • Record and review accidents and incidents where appropriate.
  • Carry out proportionate risk assessments for activities where additional risks may exist.
  • Work in partnership with the host school and comply with its health and safety procedures while using its premises.

Staff and Volunteer Responsibilities

All staff and volunteers are expected to:

  • Follow the school’s health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Supervise students appropriately during lessons, breaks, and school activities.
  • Report hazards, accidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Keep corridors, exits, and fire escape routes free from obstruction.
  • Be familiar with emergency evacuation procedures and assembly points.

Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to:

  • Follow instructions given by teachers and staff.
  • Behave responsibly to protect their own safety and the safety of others.
  • Use school equipment and facilities appropriately.
  • Report any accident, injury, or potential hazard to a member of staff immediately.

Parent Responsibilities

Parents and carers are asked to:

  • Inform the school of any relevant medical conditions, allergies, or health needs.
  • Keep emergency contact information up to date.
  • Notify the school of any health issues that may affect their child’s participation in school activities.
  • Support the school’s health and safety procedures.

Risk Assessment

The school undertakes appropriate risk assessments for educational activities, special events, and educational visits where necessary. Identified risks are managed through suitable control measures to ensure the safety of students, staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Accidents and First Aid

If a student becomes ill or is injured during school hours:

  • First aid will be provided by a trained First Aider where appropriate.
  • Parents or carers will be contacted whenever necessary.
  • In the event of a serious medical emergency, emergency services will be contacted immediately, followed by notification to the student’s parent or carer.

Emergency Procedures

The school follows the emergency, fire safety, and evacuation procedures established by the host school. Staff, volunteers, and students are expected to follow these procedures promptly whenever required.

Safeguarding

Health and safety arrangements operate alongside the school’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy. All concerns relating to the welfare or safety of a student will be managed in accordance with the school’s safeguarding procedures.

Policy Review

This policy is reviewed annually, or sooner if there are changes in legislation, official guidance, or the operational needs of the school.
